Amended gun ban bill still draws disagreement

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – An amended version of a bill banning guns from public parks is one step closer to passing its first committee.

Senate Bill 204, introduced by Senator Daniel Ivy Soto, would make the governor’s public health order banning guns in parks law.

The exception would be for on-duty law enforcement, licensed security guards, and members of the armed services like the National Guard.

Now, the bill amended on Saturday also includes in the exemption “concealed carry licensees or a federal firearms licensees.”

Many who opposed the bill say even with the amendment, they can’t stand behind it.

The amended bill has to go through two more committees before it heads to the Senate floor.

If it passes, then it will go to the House for review.
