Sandia Peak Ski Area opens to the public for first time in 2 years

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – With all the fresh snow we saw in the metro Saturday morning, it was a great day to hit the slopes. For the first time in two years, locals were able to visit the Sandia Peak Ski Area.

Officials with the resort say a lot of work went into getting the ski area ready for the big day. With Saturday’s weather, guests said it was some of the best rides they’ve had this winter.

“Can I just say it’s the best run I’ve had all season? I’ve been skiing 30 times this season; this is the best run ever,” said Land Mathis.

“I was like the 6th chair up, so I got freshy’s all the way down,” Joe Parea said.

For some riders, it was a chance to get back on slopes they hadn’t experienced in years.

“So much nostalgia coming down the hill after so many years of it being closed,” Joseph Blake explained. “It was everything I was hoping for.”

Sandia Peak officials say most of their trails are available to skiers, and snowboarders, with some limited access to the beginner-friendly hills. They will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
