ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a push to make the crossing at the Central Avenue bridge a historic landmark. That’s because city leaders want it to be remembered for the historic role it played in Route 66. “The main thing this would do is to bring notoriety and emphasis to the importance of the crossing,” said Leslie Naji, Principle Planner for Historic Preservation with the City of Albuquerque.
Naji said the Central Avenue Bridge crossing between Tingley Drive and Sunset Road is historically significant and needs to be protected. Her department submitted the idea to the Landmark Commission last year and now Albuquerque City Council is considering making the crossing a historic landmark for its role in Route 66.
