The ABQ BioPark recently reported the death of Tonka, a male Sumatran orangutan. Tonka was euthanized due to advanced kidney disease. He was 44 years old, making him the second oldest male Sumatran orangutan in the United States. Tonka was known for his distinctive facial discs and long hair.

Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered, which made Tonka’s role as a representative of the species important. BioPark guests often noticed him, and he had five offspring. Three of his offspring, Henry, Tara, and Reese, live in different zoos, while Pixel and Bulan are still at the BioPark.

Tonka was diagnosed with kidney disease six years ago. Despite no cure, he received treatments to manage his symptoms. As a result of the care he received, Tonka lived longer than the median life expectancy of 25.4 years for his species.

In his later years, Tonka lived in the primate habitats in Asia at the BioPark. He and the other orangutans had the chance to explore large new spaces, swing, and climb. Tonka often climbed to the highest platform, which provided wide views of the surrounding area.
