ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A driver is in custody for a deadly drunk driving crash in Albuquerque Tuesday evening. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said 20-year-old Miguel Chavez was speeding as he got off Paseo Del Norte at Second Street, crossed the road, and crashed into a metal pole and a curb. That caused his car to flip and crash into other vehicles stopped at a red light.

Chavez’s passenger, 49-year-old Ernesto Arreloa was killed. Everyone else had minor cuts. According to a criminal complaint, Chavez admitted to smoking marijuana and falling asleep before the crash.
Chavez was charged with homicide by vehicle DWI and driving with a revoked license. Prosecutors have filed a motion to keep him locked up until trial.
