Women encouraged to join Albuquerque Police Department Academy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – To recruit more female officers to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), the APD Academy hosted the Women in Blue event.

On Saturday, the event was a unique opportunity for women to get an insider’s perspective on a career in law enforcement, and if it is the right fit for their life. Applicants were able to talk to female officers about the hiring process and put them into the headspace of what the female officers face.

“So, not only is it a recruiting event, but it’s also an opportunity for women in the department, particularly sworn women, officers, to come into this event and work together, mentor each other, network, share experiences. We have very unique experiences sometimes in the department and in the profession, and so it’s just an opportunity to bring us a little closer together,” said Sgt. Chermaine Carter.

Limited spots were available and participants had to pre-register beforehand. Officials said the event works as they saw a 3% increase in recruitment since last year.
