MDC officer accused of raping an inmate released from custody while waiting on trial

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Chevonne Culbreath will not be held behind bars while awaiting trial. Culbreath, an officer at Metropolitan Detention Center, is accused of raping an inmate and attempting to bring contraband into MDC.

Culbreath was arrested after an inmate told police that she sexually assaulted him last month. Culbreath admitted to having sex with the inmate and picking up a package for him containing a cannabis product that she decided not to bring in. Culbreath told investigators the inmate was blackmailing her.

The state filed for pretrial detention based on the seriousness of the crime. Judge Jennifer Wernersbach released Culbreath under the supervision of pretrial services.
