NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Last week’s historic snowstorm not only left snowfall records, but it’s also been a major boost for some local ski areas and resorts.
Some ski areas are opening up almost a month before their normal scheduled date. That includes Pajarito, which said this is its earliest opening in nearly four decades.
“It’s so exciting. It really is very historic for Pajarito and to get to kick off ski season in New Mexico, it’s huge. The sooner we get to kick off what is a short season in New Mexico due to our sunny weather, the sooner we can get skiing the better,” said Christiana Hudson, Sipapu and Pajarito marketing director.

Pajarito got nearly 40 inches of snow over the last week, helping it open up around 86% of their ski terrain.
In Albuquerque, the Sandia Peak Ski area made a temporary opening over the weekend. There’s also Purgatory in Southern Colorado, which is also open for the season.
The storm also helped other popular spots in north New Mexico, including Taos and Red River Ski area, but those two are still expected to open on their usual Thanksgiving date.
