ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A single mother who immigrated to Albuquerque got a free car on Wednesday thanks to a national program. Yuneisy Ovens Hernandez immigrated to the United States 18 years ago, after working in ophthalmology in Cuba.

Before becoming a U.S. citizen three years ago, she struggled to get her education recognized in America. She and her family were homeless for a while, and Hernandez took any factory job she could find. She eventually obtained a Medical Assistant Certificate, and now has a car thanks to the National Auto Body Council Recycled Rides program.
“This car is going to make a big difference in our lives. First of all, I’m going to be able to get my son to school without asking for a ride or borrowing a car from a friend,” said Hernandez.
