Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Police across New Mexico are utilizing automatic license plate readers as a crime fighting tool. Both Bernalillo County Sheriffs Office and the ACLU agree that the technology can save lives. However, the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico has said that the data is stored too long, and is asking lawmakers for statewide regulations. BCSO responds to the concern by saying it has policies in place to prevent misuse. The two entities are hoping lawmakers can help them find a middle ground, when the legislature convenes in January.
