Calmer, cooler, & still dry weather for New Year’s

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Calmer winds and colder air, with the slight southern nudge in the jet stream, has gripped the region on the last morning of 2024 as despite passing clouds in the Four Corners, dry air is remaining.

Lighter northeasterly winds in the East Highlands is the signal that the colder air-mass has now gripped the entire state of New Mexico. Across the region from north-northwest to south-southeast, temperatures are in the single digits, teens, 20s, 30s, and low 40s.

Other than some mid-to-high-level clouds moving mostly to the east-southeast later this afternoon with the westerly winds picking back up but not nearly as strong as yesterday, dry air will still lead to no precipitation. High temperatures will be lower for all, but generally, afternoon temperatures will still mostly be above normal. From the morning school commute throughout the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the upper 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and near the low 70s from north-northeast to south-southwest with temperatures quickly dropping by New Year’s tonight with another slight reinforcing shot of colder air.
