(KRQE) – Crime remains a big issue in New Mexico; but the metro area’s top prosecutor said the numbers show his office is doing more to get murderers, shoplifters, and other criminals off the street. Looking back at two years in office, District Attorney (DA) Sam Bregman said convictions for homicide and a long list of other crimes are all trending in the right direction: “We overall are seeing crime get better. It takes a while to turn a ship in the ocean, a big ship, but we’re starting to turn.”
Bregman is now heading into his first elected term after taking over the office in January 2023 from now-New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez. “It’s been an amazing time. I’ve been so impressed and honored to work with people here in this office. We have over 300 individuals who wake up every day and try and make this place a safer place,” Bregman said.
