Winter Weather Advisory: Up to 15 Inches of Snow Expected in New Mexico’s Southwest Mountains

Albuquerque, NM – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for much of western and northern New Mexico, with snowfall expected to impact travel conditions through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, snow will begin falling Friday afternoon and continue through early Saturday. Areas affected include Glorieta Mesa, Glorieta Pass, the Upper Rio Grande Valley, and the Western Mountains. Snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches are expected in most locations, while the Southwest Mountains could see totals of 5 to 15 inches at elevations above 8,500 feet.

The advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. MST Saturday for Glorieta Mesa and the Upper Rio Grande Valley, while the Western Mountains and surrounding areas are under the advisory until 5 a.m. MST Saturday. The snowfall is expected to create hazardous travel conditions, particularly along portions of Interstate 25 and Interstate 40.
