New USPS stamps will showcase paintings by Cochiti Pueblo artist

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The U.S. Postal Service will soon release new Forever stamps that have a connection to New Mexico’s Native American community.

The four stamps showcase original paintings of Native American dancers by Cochiti Pueblo artist Mateo Romero. USPS said in a news release that the artist took photographs of the dancers in their traditional clothing while performing and then painted on top of the images.

The “Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture” stamps include the Women’s Traditional Dance, Crow Hop Dance, Men’s Hoop Dance, and Women’s Fancy Shawl Dance. They were designed by USPS art director Antonio Alcalá…
