State looking to create ‘Reality Based Training Facility’ for law enforcement in New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Training for an emergency by making it feel real. The state is hoping to build a facility where law enforcement officers can get immersive training in a life-like environment. Right now, there are only a few of these reality-based training centers in New Mexico, and KRQE News 13 got a firsthand look at one of them in Albuquerque.

“This is kind of a new phenomenon the last 5 or 6 years where agencies are trying to create real life like environments where they can train,” said Dr. Troy Rodger, a public safety psychologist.

Environments like living rooms, restaurants, and hospitals are the idea behind “Reality-Based Training Facilities,” which have been gaining more and more attention across the state of New Mexico. Now New Mexico’s Department of Public Safety wants to create a center in Santa Fe, requesting $7 million in state funding to do it. They want to follow in the footsteps of the Public Safety Psychology group, who have managed a facility in Albuquerque for almost ten years…
