Trial continues Thursday for former APD officer accused of false imprisonment

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The second trial for former Albuquerque Police Department Officer Kenneth Skeens is set to continue Thursday. Skeens is accused of unlawfully arresting Matthew McManus while he was attempting to purchase a bicycle at an Albuquerque Target self-checkout in August 2022.

Wednesday, a recording of McManus’ statement was played for the jury. The state also called Target’s former asset protection specialist, Ty Hunt, to the stand. Hunt described Target’s process for issuing a criminal trespass. He said him and Skeens were keeping an eye on McManus, but he never asked Skeens to remove him from the store.

Skeens is charged with false imprisonment, perjury, and making a false report. Skeens’ first trial was declared a mistrial as the result of a hung jury after they were unable to unanimously agree on a verdict. The trial is expected to last through the end of the week, and Skeens faces up to four years behind bars if convicted…
