Eastern New Mexico is bracing for significant snow and cold temperatures starting Friday through Saturday, as a powerful winter storm sweeps through the region, according to the National Weather Service office in Albuquerque.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, areas such as the Northern Mountains, including the Sangre De Cristo, Tusas, and Jemez Mountains, will see heavy snow accumulations, with up to a foot possible in higher elevations. Low elevations may experience rain mixing with snow. The storm will also bring near-record low temperatures to the eastern plains, with temperatures 15-40 degrees below normal. Blowing snow and strong winds up to 55 mph may create hazardous travel conditions, particularly along the I-40 corridor. Conditions will begin to improve by Sunday.
