Albuquerque officials demonstrate new HAWK signal at Central and Rio Grande

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Residents got to learn how the new crosswalk hawk signals work in southwest Albuquerque. City officials talked to drivers and pedestrians about how to use the signal at Rio Grande Blvd. and Central Ave.

“So whenever you approach one of these lights, if you do see a red light, a steady red light, or a flashing red light, remember that is like a regular red light. You have to stop, let the peds cross, and it will signal you to start the flow of traffic again when it’s time to do that,” said Commander Benito Martinez, Albuquerque Police Department.

The signal is activated when a pedestrian pushes the button at either end of the crossing. Even with the HAWK signal, they are reminding pedestrians to stay alert and wait for the walk signal before crossing the street…
