‘A shining gem:’ Zia Elementary School in Albuquerque celebrating 75th anniversary

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – One of the oldest elementary schools in Albuquerque is marking a major milestone. Zia Elementary School is turning 75 years old on Saturday, and parents, teachers, and students are throwing a big birthday party.

“Everyone knows everyone in this school, it’s really great. It’s been a just really kind of shining gem, I think, in the Albuquerque public schools and the community,” said Megan Henrie, a parent of a third and first grader.

Zia Elementary School opened on May 3, 1955, and some of the original buildings are still standing. In honor of its history, faculty and parents worked more than a year planning the birthday celebration. “I feel very excited, and I hope its legacy can keep living on,” said third grader Jett Hunter…
