Study: Inmate population at Metropolitan Detention Center is increasing

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – While crime is down in New Mexico, a new study from the University of New Mexico is revealing the population inside the Metropolitan Detention Center continues to rise. According to the study, from 2019 to 2024, MDC saw a 30% increase in inmates. Within the last six months, the jail has been at its highest population since July 2014.

Researchers believe an increase in bookings, the length of stay, and recidivism is causing the increase. While the population is growing, the study shows MDC is not overcrowded, reporting 80% capacity as of May.
