LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Around 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, Los Lunas Police posted to Facebook that the Valencia County Fire Department, along with Los Lunas Fire, responded to a Bosque fire south of the Los Lunas bridge on the west side of the river. The fire is now being dubbed the Cotton Fire.
Valencia County Fire Chief Matt Propp has been providing updates throughout the afternoon and says as of Saturday night, the fire has burned around 300 acres. “Our assessment is, it’s probably going to be more than that once we get into the evening and push out. We’re starting to do some aerial mapping with aircraft and drones, so we should get a better picture of what that acreage looks like,” Propp says.
The fire chief says that about six to 10 homes have been lost, with several others sustaining damage. Twelve firefighters are also said to have been injured during their efforts to bring it under control.
