Rio Rancho celebrates Juneteenth

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – The city of Rio Rancho celebrated Juneteenth this weekend as the event took over the Haynes Community Center with music, inspirational performances, and community. Juneteenth is the holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States and the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865.

Juneteenth celebrated at Civic Plaza

Saturday’s celebration in Rio Rancho embraced Black heritage across New Mexico. Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs from across the city were represented at the event.

Texas became the first state to name Juneteenth as an official holiday in 1979 and was made a federal holiday in June of 2021…
