EEOC sues South Valley nursing care facility over claims of age discrimination against workers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an independent federal agency that promotes equal opportunity in employment, has filed a lawsuit against a South Valley long-term nursing care facility claiming it violated federal law by harassing, discriminating against, and retaliating against older employees.

According to the EEOC, older workers in the South Valley Care Center laundry department claimed they were harassed by their supervisor, who reportedly made statements about their age. The workers also allege that they were treated less favorably than younger workers, including not being provided the same number of breaks and not receiving their preferred schedules.

When older workers complained about age and national origin discrimination, South Valley Care Center failed to address their complaints adequately and fired at least two workers in retaliation for complaining, the EEOC wrote in a news release.

“Age discrimination continues to be a persistent problem in the workplace,” Mary Jo O’Neill, regional attorney for the EEOC, stated in the news release. “Older workers are an essential part of the workforce, and the EEOC is committed to fighting for the rights of all workers, including vulnerable older workers.”…
