Clovis man sentenced for murder of ex-girlfriend in 2022

CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – A Clovis man was sentenced to prison Thursday for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Kelsey Cash in 2022.

A Curry County jury found Chavez guilty of second-degree murder, aggravated burglary, and tampering with evidence in March. Chavez was in an on-and-off relationship with Cash when investigators said he forced his way into her home after a phone call and shot Cash 13 times before fleeing the scene.

While searching Chavez’s home, investigators found shoes with the same design as those left at Cash’s home, an empty gun case, ammo, and clothing that had been bleached and thrown in a washing machine.

Judge Fred Van Soelen sentenced Chavez to 30 years in the Department of Corrections. Officials said 18 years of the sentence is considered a serious violent offense, which requires Chavez to serve at least 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole…
