ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Petroglyphs west of Albuquerque are celebrating a big milestone Saturday. The site was officially made a national monument 35 years ago.
Community and tribal members came together at the visitor’s center to commemorate the occasion. The Petroglyphs are a unique national monument in the U.S. because it is so close to a major city.
Petroglyph National Monument turns 35
“It was the efforts of the people all around our monument, of course, our pueblos and tribes, and also concerned citizens in the city, who got together 35 years ago and really started making some noise to get this place conserved. They got the issue taken up to the level of Congress,” says Ben Holt, education technician with Petroglyph National Monument.
The anniversary celebration continues Sunday at 8:00 a.m. with a guided tour of the Piedras Marcadas Canyon…
