Innocent bystander shot 6 times by Albuquerque police sues city

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – He wasn’t who police were chasing, but officers shot him six times. Now, that innocent bystander is taking the city to court, claiming the group of officers who shot him were reckless.

Around midnight on June 29, 2023, Albuquerque police fired shot after shot toward a suspect at a bus stop. That suspect, Jeramiah Salyards, was wanted that night for stabbing a man at a McDonald’s drive-thru. Police shot and killed Salyards near Louisiana Blvd. and Lomas Blvd., but they also injured two other people in the process. One of those victims, Reese Benally, is now suing Albuquerque police and the four officers who opened fire.

According to the lawsuit, Benally was shot six times, leaving him with permanent physical injuries. The lawsuit also notes how police tried to cuff Benally after he was wounded. The four officers involved, Brenda Johnson, Eric Wilensky, Violeta Baca, and Christian Cordova, no longer work for Albuquerque police…
