City of Albuquerque reminds residents to safely dispose of fireworks

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management Department is asking residents to use caution when disposing of fireworks so that fires do not start later on.

Fireworks can smolder long after they are used and pose a significant fire risk when mixed with trash. The fireworks, if not completely put out, can cause fires inside trash bins, trucks or in the landfill.

“Independence Day and the following week is the most dangerous time for our department,” said Solid Waste Management Director Billy Gallegos in a news release. “Truck fires and landfill fires are extremely serious because of how quickly they can get out of control, so we ask everyone to enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly to protect themselves and our hardworking employees.”…
