Bernalillo Co. Sheriff’s Office carries out encampment removal operation in Bosque

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday morning that BCSO Open Space Deputies are aiming to remove unauthorized encampments and reduce fire risks in the Bosque Open Space. The move is part of an initiative deemed “Operation Bosque Guardian.”

The operation begins in the South Valley and plans to move northward. This is what BCSO says the initiative entails:

  • Immediate removal of unauthorized encampments
  • Cleanup efforts in coordination with the County Clean Team
  • On-site outreach from BCSO’s Behavioral Health Unit
  • Aerial surveillance and support from MASU and drone units

Metro Air Support Unit carried out flyovers recently and found a number of camps throughout the Bosque. This information is being used to “guide cleanup efforts and prevent re-establishment in cleared areas.” “We are committed to keeping our open spaces clean, safe, and accessible for everyone,” said Sheriff John Allen. “Our Open Space Deputies, supported by the Metro Air Support Unit, are working around the clock to protect one of our community’s greatest natural resources.”
