ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — Off San Felipe Street in Old Town lies a chapel that once housed an art school offering classes on religious art, sacred design, and more. The Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe now serves as a non-denominational chapel and an affordable wedding venue, all tucked away in the corner of Patio Escondido.
Managing Member of Patio Escondido and Chapel Wedding/Event Coordinator Tamara Hochman says the property used to house Sagrada Art School, which was founded in the 60s. “One of the options that students had when they enrolled there was to work in the restaurant that was called St. Joseph’s Table. And they had art studios where they could do their work,” said Hochman. “They had a framing shop. They had a permanent gallery and a rotating gallery. Now, those buildings have been repurposed. And the dormitories are six apartments, and the art studios are now occupied…”
Those occupants currently include a hair salon, skin and lash studio, two jewelry stores, a nail salon, and an art gallery. Hochman sees the spaces as a way for small businesses to do what they love at a low cost…
