Flood watch issued for portion of central New Mexico on Thursday

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — A flood watch has been issued for part of central New Mexico including the South Central Mountains on Thursday morning, according to the NWS for Albuquerque. The watch is expected to remain active through Friday evening.

The NWS says flash flooding due to excess rainfall is possible. Excessive runoff could lead to flooding rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying or flood-prone areas. Creaks and streams could rise out of their banks and flooding may happen in urban areas, or areas with poor drainage. Low-water crossings could be flooded as well.

Thunderstorms are expected to begin developing around the Sacramento Mountains close to noon, then persist through the early evening. Estimated rain amounts are between 0.25 and 0.75 inches, although heavier amounts up to two inches are also possible…
