Over 80 APS middle schoolers participate in Governor’s Summer Challenge

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – More than 80 middle school students in Albuquerque have completed this year’s Governor’s Summer Challenge. The summer challenge program is a five-week course hosted by the state’s National Guard. It provides students with an opportunity to work on literacy, academics, physical fitness, and leadership skills.

“I have seen so much growth in these students, not only with their confidence, but some of them have talked about their academics improving, some of the students have talked about how they’ve made friends and how they feel like there has been no bullying, how they feel comfortable with the guards and staff. We have really built a family here,” says Lucia Lower, director of the Governor Summer Challenge Program.

The program began last year at Jimmy Carter Middle School but has expanded to Van Buren and Wilson Middle School…
