Albuquerque man sentenced to nearly four years in prison on two convictions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — An Albuquerque man has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison after two separate convictions in a half-year span. The first case involved shots fired with a stolen gun, and the second case involved multiple violent assaults. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico confirms that Anthony Hernandez, 32, is subject to three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence.

According to court documents, APD responded to a ShotSpotter alert as well as 911 calls reporting gunfire and a man brandishing a weapon outside of a southeast apartment complex on Oct. 26, 2021. At the scene, officers found Hernandez attempting to hide behind a wall.. A search led to the recovery of a stolen 9mm pistol. Hernandez is a convicted felon who is prohibited from firearm possession. He was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm following a jury trial in October of 2024.

During pretrial detention, the U.S. Attorney’s Office states that Hernandez committed multiple violent assaults. He attacked a CoreCivic security contractor on Nov. 15, 2022. This led to serious injuries, including a concussion and nose fracture. Hernandez was indicted for assaulting a federal officer resulting in bodily injury. Investigation revealed Hernandez had been involved in other assaults on fellow inmates and correctional officers. One incident involved a homemade weapon. Hernandez was found with contraband, including a sharpened weapon and methamphetamine, while he was in custody. Following a three-day trial in January of 2025, a federal jury found Hernandez guilty…
