Active weather day expected Tuesday in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It’s going to be a busy weather day across New Mexico with rain and storms likely popping up throughout the day Tuesday.

More monsoonal rain is possible during the afternoon and evening hours. As a result, a flood watch is in effect for the central mountain chain and the southwestern mountains, including the Gila Wilderness. Eastern Bernalillo County and Los Alamos is also under that watch, which goes from noon to 10 p.m.

Another round of slow-moving storms across the state are possible Tuesday. Burn scars and low-lying areas will see some of the highest chances of flash flooding. Mora experienced this Monday as a heavy, nearly stationary storm dropped 1-3 inches of rainfall in a short time over the Hermit’s Peak-Calf Canyon burn scars during the noon hour. Several of these areas also have seen repeated rounds of rain in recent days, keeping soils saturated and elevating chances of flash flooding.

The Weather Prediction Center has increased the potential of flash flooding Tuesday as newer model data increases the coverage area and likelihood of seeing slower-moving, heavy thunderstorms across much of the area.
