Local judge and wife issues apology over offensive texts

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Chief Metro Judge Joshua Sanchez and his wife Albuquerque Public School Board Member, Heather Benavidez, are apologizing after an offensive text exchange on July 16 revealed the two calling APS board member, Courtney Jackson, the C-word.

“While engaging in a private text message conversation with my wife, via our personal devices, I regrettably used inappropriate language in reference to the actions of another APS School Board member,” said Sanchez. “An unfortunate breach of our privacy occurred when someone took a photo of my wife’s computer screen without her knowledge or consent. I deeply regret my words and the impact they have had. The next day a conversation was had with the school board member. Apologies were extended and accepted. We believed the matter had been resolved.”

Benavidez echoed similar feelings in a statement to KOB 4:

“While engaging in a private text message conversation with my husband—on our personal devices—I regrettably used inappropriate language in reference to the actions of APS School Board Member Jackson,” said Benavidez. “An unfortunate breach of our privacy occurred when a different board member took a photo of my personal computer screen without my knowledge or consent, and shared the photo with Member Jackson. I deeply regret my words and the impact they have had. I reached out telephonically to Member Jackson the very next day and offered a sincere apology, which she accepted. I have also publicly apologized to fellow board members, community members, and my constituents and pledged to do better. I believe the matter is resolved and I look forward to continuing to focus on our important work of supporting the amazing educators, staff, and students of APS.”
