District attorney says Bennie’s Law is not helping deter juvenile crime

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A law in our state is supposed to make parents think twice about leaving their guns where kids could get hold of them, but the district attorney who covers southeastern New Mexico says Bennie’s Law is not preventing juvenile crime.

Fifth Judicial District Attorney, Dianna Luce, says there are many juveniles in her district charged with gun-related crimes. She says Bennie’s Law is not putting a dent in the number of kids getting their hands on guns.

“Is the intent to reduce juveniles having firearms, or is the intention to get adults to secure their weapons? If they just want to make people aware and get them get gun locks, gun safes, then that statute may be working, and how do you really track that data? If we’re trying to reduce juveniles having firearms, then we’ve got to maybe do a wider brush,” said Luce…
