ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A former Albuquerque Police Department cadet and her husband are now charged with human smuggling and money laundering. Nan Zhang, 44, and 62-year-old Sanjay Khurana are accused of turning four rental properties into stash houses for human smuggling.

Federal prosecutors said that from March 2023 to this past July, the couple knowingly rented units to smugglers to house people brought into the country illegally. The indictment said the two inflated rent prices for those units and tried to launder the money through a real estate deal. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison.
