ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Nearly a year after city officials launched a major initiative to close motels they called “havens for drugs and crime,” several of the shuttered properties are now back in business — or well on their way.

Since October, the City of Albuquerque has shut down seven motels following a pattern of complaints, police activity, drug and gun seizures, and frequent emergency calls. Ten months later, city officials say several of the closed motels have made major strides toward compliance. “The goal is to work with these motels and to educate them and to bring them into compliance and to provide a safe place for people to utilize these services,” said Jeremy Keiser, Deputy Director of Code Enforcement with the City of Albuqeurque’s Planning Department.
Three motels — including the Days Inn near Coors Blvd. and I-40, the Bow and Arrow Lodge on East Central Ave., and the Tewa Lodge on Central Ave. — have all come back into compliance with city code. The Tewa Lodge remains closed and is currently for sale…
