Albuquerque city councilor asks Congress to help city buy old Walmart building

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Walmart on San Mateo Blvd. and Central Ave. has been vacant for several years. The city made an attempt to buy it from Walmart, but the superstore would not come down on price. Now, a city councilor is trying to raise the money to meet the price tag.

The city acquired $2 million to try to buy the property and turn it into something good for the area, such as a new grocery store or affordable housing. But Walmart would not come down from its $10 million price tag. Now, Albuquerque City Councilor Nicole Rogers is requesting $9 million more to successfully buy the property.

The 206,000-square-foot Walmart on nearly 18 acres of land closed over two years ago in March 2023. After the superstore closed, the area has been known as a food desert. It’s also increased crime and homelessness in the area…
