World War II vet takes ride in same-style aircraft he once flew ahead of 100th birthday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A 99-year-old World War II veteran got the ride of his life Wednesday morning in a P-51 Mustang at the Albuquerque International Sunport. “Old days, and it’s been a long time,” World War II Veteran Bernie Armstrong said.

Armstrong got a ride in the same style plane he used to fly in World War II, just ahead of his birthday. “He flew these planes in World War II, and he wanted to get a ride in one,” Armstrong’s daughter Mary Medina said. “His 100th birthday is next month.”

Armstrong served in World War II in Korea, and Vietnam. He enlisted at age 17 in 1943 and retired 30 years ago. “When he flew the P-51, he was flying out of the Pacific,” Medina said. “Bomber escorts and stuff. Then he was in the Korean War and overseas. Then he was stationed in North Carolina during the Vietnam War.”…
