Albuquerque begins work on mixed-use housing development in Uptown

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Years in the making, Albuquerque is finally moving forward with a big, new, first-of-its-kind building project promising to combine housing, new shops, a brewery, and even a bus station in Uptown. “We’re driving towards the future, and it’s logical to pair mass transit with housing. People that are living in places need to be able to not have to rely on a vehicle, not having to maintain, purchase an automobile,” said Leslie Keener, Transit Director for CABQ.

It’s Albuquerque’s second-largest urban center, and now the city says its plans for a new “Uptown” project could turn it into the next entertainment district. “Uptown Connect” is planned to be a six-story mixed-use housing development combined with a city transit center.

ABQ Ride and private developer “Palindrome” are leading the development, which has been in the works for 27 years. Their design, now more than halfway complete, will add 239 apartments with 203 of those in the “affordable” category for those who make 30-80% of the local median income…
