Teen charged in bicyclist’s death will stay in custody

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –  On Wednesday, a judge decided to keep a teenager in custody after he was charged in connection with the death of bicyclist Scott Habermehl. William Garcia is facing a murder charge for the death of Habermehl last year. He was 15 years old at the time and is said to be the one who recorded the incident and could be heard saying, “Just bump him.”

Judge David Murphy said that releasing Garcia to his parents would be dangerous. “I’m somewhat stunned today to understand that the defendant’s parents are taking responsibility for this and are indicating that what I saw in the social media, and the defendant posing with a firearm in front of a car, was under their supervision. This defendent poses a very serious risk of harming other people,” said Judge Murphy.

He ruled that Garcia is a danger to the public and should be kept in custody until trial…
