First portion of the Rail Trail opens in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s an idea that’s been decades in the making, and on Saturday afternoon, the first part of the Rail Trail in Albuquerque was opened to the public. Construction on this part of the trail has taken two years.

City completes upgrades to West Mesa Trail, honors local advocate

It’s part of a planned seven-mile loop, connecting downtown, Old Town, and the Sawmill District. The trail also has two pieces of art, tailored to their place in the community.

“Right here, you can see that there are two of these gateways. Each gateway expresses an aspect of the neighborhood that they’re adjacent to. This one is in Sawmill, so you can see the saw blade, and the shadow of the saw blade, and if you take a picture of it, it looks even more vivid. It becomes that Instagram moment. And you can see the next gateway drawing you like a magnet to the next section,” said Paul Fehlau, Executive Senior Associate, Antoine Predock Architect PC.

The first segment of the project is nearly a quarter-mile long and costs about $5 million. It connects Mountain Road to Bellamah Avenue in front of the Sawmill Market…
