Construction of COVID-19 memorial begins

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – State officials are memorializing New Mexicans who passed away from COVID-19. Saturday’s event marks the beginning of construction on one of the first publicly funded state COVID memorials in the nation.

The displays are designed to cast patterns of light and shadow across the landscape, signifying the lives lost during the pandemic. Six artists were selected to create metal panels that line the memorial’s planned pilgrimage path.

“This is the way that New Mexicans remember, through a pilgrimage, and the site is so fitting because you can see the beautiful Rio Grande Valley, and you can see the Sandias, and you can look towards the north and see Santa Fe. It is in Bernalillo County, but it’s a memorial for the whole state,” said Eleanor Bravo, chair of the steering committee for the New Mexico COVID-19 Memorial.

Phase one of the memorial is expected to open in 2026. The memorial is located near Isleta Amphitheater…
