Albuquerque City Council approves changes to traffic code

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque City Council approved sweeping changes to its traffic code. Under the new code, drivers must stop at crosswalks for anyone waiting to cross, and drivers cannot pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk or intersection for a crossing pedestrian. The code also establishes rules for HAWK signals, and all revenue collected from speed camera citations must go to the city’s Vision Zero traffic safety initiatives.

The changes come after 19-year-old Kayla Vanlandingham was hit and killed while riding her bicycle on a crosswalk on Carlisle Blvd. this summer. Her mother has advocated for these changes since then. “If this code existed in its current form, I truly believe Kayla would still be with me today, and I also believe we would have a better driving culture, and we wouldn’t be leading the nation as having the worst drivers,” said Melinda Montoya, Kayla Vanlandingham’s mother.
