ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen says New Mexico’s court system is failing to keep repeat offenders off the streets, and he’s turning to federal partners in an effort to change that.
Allen announced that his office is working with U.S. Marshals through a joint initiative called Operation Triple Beam – a public rollout he says was accelerated after a deputy-involved shooting on Central Avenue last week.
“The system we have is failing and not working. The people paying for it is you, me and everyone else in our community,” Allen said.
Citing examples and data
At a briefing, the sheriff pointed to what he described as hundreds of examples of defendants who were arrested, released, and re-arrested. Among them is Jeremy Bradly, who court records show has been arrested 41 times in Bernalillo County. Allen said Bradly has been booked five times this year on charges including drug possession, negligent use of a deadly weapon, and fleeing.
