ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was an acquittal that shocked the community and shattered an Albuquerque family. An accused killer was found not guilty in the murder of an army veteran during a botched robbery. At the time, it looked like he could still face consequences in a different case out of state. However, a year and a half later, KRQE is trying to learn why he’s only just now being extradited.
Over the last decade, Matthew Chavez has been charged with a string of violent crimes across at least three states. After he was acquitted on murder charges in Albuquerque, authorities told KRQE he was supposed to be extradited to Texas. Why he wasn’t, and where he’s been for the last year and a half, remains unclear.
