Richard W. Etulain, professor emeritus of history at The University of New Mexico, has published his 65th book. At 82, Etulain continues to write, with two more books in progress. His next book, ‘Basques of the American West,’ will be released in early 2026 by the University of Nevada Press. The book examines the history and cultural identity of Basque communities in the American West. Etulain has studied this topic since the 1970s, influenced by his Basque heritage and his father’s immigration from Spain.
The new book will address ethnic identity, Western history, and literature. It will focus on Basque influence in areas such as New Mexico. The collection includes essays on Basque themes in Western literature and discusses figures like Juan de OƱate. Etulain aims to reach readers interested in the cultures of the American West.
