La Mesa Presbyterian Church feeds thousands with 30th Feast of Hope despite community hardships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — For 30 years, La Mesa Presbyterian Church has been hosting its Feast of Hope in the heart of the International District, typically serving a crowd of 1,000. However, this year, they were preparing for their largest event yet—1,600 people.

“In the last few weeks, we’ve had to up our game, getting ready to feed 1,600 people today,” said Brett Mitchell, the pastor at La Mesa Presbyterian Church. “If at the end of this, we still have food, then we’re going to send people out to go to the overpasses and underpasses and Northeast and Northwest and Southwest and Southeast Albuquerque and be sure that everyone is covered so that there’s no one who can say, I didn’t get a meal on this day.”

Sixteen organizations and churches had volunteers putting together the meals, with some preparing plates in an assembly-line fashion for those who would pick them up, while others readied over 600 meals for delivery to individuals who cannot travel, such as those in assisted living facilities and homebound seniors…
