New permit would allow neighborhood markets to open in residential areas in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a new way to get fresh produce in your neighborhood. The idea, launched by the City of Albuquerque, aims to help people get produce from more local farmers into the hands of people in communities in need. The city said that by putting small-scale storefronts in underserved residential areas, it can get fresh produce to more people.

“We’re trying to make it easy for food that is fresh and local to be made available to everyone, so we start to see local, fresh food becoming synonymous with what is affordable and convenient for people,” Arya Lamb said with the City of Albuquerque.

The City’s Environmental Health Department is looking to create a new way for small-scale storefront markets to sell their produce in neighborhoods. It’s called retail food establishment permitting, and it was developed to exist in areas that lack convenient access to healthy food. “We want to address food deserts, and there are certain areas in town that are designated food deserts,” Lamb said. “We have some in the South Valley and some in the International District.”…
