Prescribed Fire in Sandia Ranger District May Cause Smoke Near Albuquerque and Surrounding Communities

On December 10, 2025, fire crews from Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands completed pile burning on the Sulphur unit in the Sandia Ranger District near Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Crews will continue to monitor the area and conduct mop-up operations until the fire is fully out. Smoke may be visible from nearby communities, including Albuquerque, Tijeras, Edgewood, and Moriarty.

The prescribed fire took place under favorable conditions, such as recent precipitation, snow cover, and cooler temperatures. The goal was to safely burn slash and woody debris from earlier forest restoration work…
